Why You'll Love It

Baby Kim® is the smallest lilac you can grow in tree form — and one of the most charming. Its compact, rounded canopy is covered in fragrant purple flowers in mid to late spring, and the glossy dark green foliage keeps it looking attractive through the rest of the growing season. If you have a small patio, a balcony, or simply want a lilac that stays perfectly proportioned without constant pruning, Baby Kim® is the answer.

Care Instructions

Planting & Watering
Planting

Plant in full sun — lilacs need at least 6 hours of direct sun daily for the best bloom. Choose well-drained soil; lilacs do not tolerate wet or poorly drained sites. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and at the same depth. Backfill, water thoroughly, and apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch, keeping it a few inches away from the trunk.

Watering

Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, lilacs are relatively drought tolerant. Water deeply during prolonged dry periods, but avoid keeping the root zone constantly moist.

Pruning & Fertilizing
Pruning

Prune immediately after flowering — this is critical. Lilacs bloom on old wood (growth from the previous year), so any pruning done in late summer, fall, or winter will remove next year's flower buds. Prune right after the flowers fade in spring to shape the canopy. Remove any shoots from below the graft.

Fertilizing

Lilacs are light feeders. An annual application of compost or a balanced fertilizer in spring is typically sufficient. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, which promote leafy growth at the expense of flowers.

Winter Protection

Hardy to Zone 3. Lilacs are very cold hardy and require no special winter protection in most climates. Remove any winter-damaged wood in early spring.

Good to Know

Baby Kim® is exceptionally well suited to container growing due to its compact size. Container-grown plants need more frequent watering than in-ground plants. Always prune immediately after flowering — never in fall or winter.

Frequently Asked Questions

How small is Baby Kim® compared to other lilacs?
Baby Kim® is the smallest lilac available in tree form. The underlying cultivar stays approximately 2–3 ft tall as a shrub — significantly smaller than even other compact lilacs. In tree form, the overall height is typically 4–5 ft.
Is Baby Kim® fragrant?
Yes — Baby Kim® carries the classic sweet lilac fragrance. Because the blooms are held at eye level in tree form, the scent is especially enjoyable on the patio.
When does Baby Kim® bloom?
Baby Kim® blooms in mid to late spring, typically May. The bloom period lasts 2–3 weeks.
Can Baby Kim® grow in Zone 8?
Baby Kim® is listed as hardy to Zone 8, making it more heat-tolerant than most lilacs. However, bloom performance may be reduced in the warmest parts of Zone 8 due to insufficient winter chilling hours.
Does Baby Kim® need deadheading?
Deadheading is not required, but removing spent blooms promptly after flowering can improve the plant's appearance and encourage better foliage growth through summer. Always prune immediately after flowering — never in late summer, fall, or winter.
